چکیده

Etlhylene production by the greenl miold of citrus, Plenicilliutmit digitatuimit Sacc., has beeni investigated by a number of workers (1), but its pathway of biosynthesis and importance in fungal metabolism have yet to be defined. Factors affecting growth of the funglus have been studied intensively and a satisfactory medium has been developed (2, 7). The importance of zinc and yeast extract as growth factors in the medium was demonstrated by Pratt (7) andl later wvorkers (3, 9). In these studies, ethylene production and growth were assumed to be directlv related. More recently, Spalding and Lieberman (8) reported that yeast extract exerts a much greater stimulatory effect on ethylene production thani on growth. The present report will consider the effect of yeast extract components on ethylene production by P. digitatum11t. Variation found to be associated with the source of fungal inoculum and cultural conditions will also be discussed.

Characterization of the Phosphate-mediated Control of Ethylene Production by Penicillium digitatum.

Characterization of the phosphate effect on ethylene production by Penicillium digitatum is reported. A low level of phosphate (0.001 millimolar) was about 200 to 500 times as effective as a high phosphate level (100 millimolar) in stimulating ethylene production and the stimulation was readily reversed by addition of phosphate. This phosphate effect did not operate in static cultures. The prec...

Involvement of ethylene biosynthesis and perception in the susceptibility of citrus fruits to Penicillium digitatum infection and the accumulation of defence-related mRNAs.

Citrus fruits infected with the fungus Penicillium digitatum substantially increase the production of the plant hormone ethylene. In this study, the regulation of ethylene biosynthesis in Citrus sinensis-infected fruits and its putative involvement in an active defence response against P. digitatum infection is examined. Ethylene production is demonstrated as being the result of the co-ordinate...

Identification of Ethylene as a Volatile Product of the Fungus Penicillium Digitatum.

Experiments reported independently by BIALE (1) and MILLER, WINSTON, and FISHER (8) revealed that the common green mold of citrus fruits, P. digitatum, produces a physiologically active emanation whose effects on plant tissue are the same as those caused by ethylene gas. It was shown by the latter authors and by BIALE and SHEPHERD (3) that this fungus produces this emanation whether grown on it...

Methionine-induced Ethylene Production by Penicillium digitatum.

Shake cultures, in contrast to static cultures of Penicillium digitatum grown in liquid medium, were induced by methionine to produce ethylene. The induction was concentration-dependent, and 7 mM was optimum for the methionine effect. In the presence of methionine, glucose (7 mM) enhanced ethylene production but did not itself induce ethylene production. The induction process lasted several hou...

Penicillium digitatum Suppresses Production of Hydrogen Peroxide in Host Tissue During Infection of Citrus Fruit.

ABSTRACT During the infection of citrus fruit by Penicillium digitatum there is little evidence of a host defense response. This suggests that P. digitatum has the ability to suppress host defenses. The current study demonstrates that P. digitatum suppresses a defense-related hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) burst in host tissue. In contrast, the nonhost pathogen, Penicillium expansum, triggers pro...
